beautiful use of shadows and color :)
the only thing that i dont get is the focus.
it seems the subject is the door...? and with the DOF as shallow as it should be at f/4.5, the legs and chair are a little fuzzy
one thing i like about that, however, is that the slats of shadow on the door are heavily accented, and a great focal point for the piece.
its almost like a form of subterfuge is going on...like you want us to be distracted by the door...the light and shadow playing with each other...so we dont see what youre doing up on that chair!
what are you doing?! speak to me!!!
:D

Thank you. I was thinking about all of that when working! Glad you can see that. Check out more of my work, I'll make sure to check out yours.

Best comments I've gotten in a while! Thank you! Well, it is me and I used the timer. I had to run over to the chair and balance it, not move and be quiet. Here, I think I moved a bit = fuzzy and I think the focus always get a little funny when using the timer and I don't have any sort of stand in. I've been thinking about the shadows and the doors being in focus and I like the juxtaposition between the geometric/static and the moving curvature of the figure. there is an incredible relationship just between the shadows, chair, and door and the thought of them being too distracting makes me nervous. I was interested in getting this sort of grid or bars with the chair, and using the chair as a way to get over that grid, bar shaped shadow.

up and over. in leaps and bounds
:iconi-am-pi:
well put :D
i wouldnt say that the bars of shadow, and the contrast they make is too distracting, i think, given the focus (and i know what you mean about timers...theyre fun...but can be a pain :) ) that the bars become the subject...at least in my eyes.
i tend to see the subject of a photo as what is the most in focus, despite the artists intentions. sometimes a photo is meant ot have its subject purposfully out of focus, but my eyes go straight into the focal plane.
so it isnt that the bars are taking away from the chair, and your intended "freedom" from the window created by the chair back, but that the "window" has become the focal point, and the excaping prisoner is another line in the story of the "window's" life.
and...
i'm done ranting. :D
'tis a great shot, despite my haggling =p

Thank you, glad I was clear. 'Words' and I have an on again off again kind of relationship.
I understand what you are saying, the eye can rest in the area that is most in focus. By eye certainly drifts to the same place. I am curious how I might make it about the act of escaping..try to make the figure element and the shadows equal forces at battle.
That is'nt ranting! I love to talk about this stuff! Your feedback is priceless. I love pinpointing every characteristic of a piece. I love talking about my work, glad I was able to con you into saying so much already! I treasure what you've said so far, don't hesitate to comment some more! Please!

thanks again, I'll be thinking about these ideas for a bit, and will try to reshoot. hopefully i can before i get back to school.

sorry, I don't like pie.

try getting either more of the scene in focus by dropping the aperture to f/8 or f/11. that way the entire scene is visible and easily discernible as the subject. the drawback to this is that you'll either need more light, which can bring in unwanted shadows and highlights, or you'll need to hold still for a longer exposure.
or, maybe try getting the focus more on the legs and chair, and leave the background out of focus. you'll still be able to see the shape of the "window" but it will be more of a conceptual idea than a straight up "light through a chair back".
dang it...i had SO much more to say, but accidentally hit the backspace key when the text box wasnt highlighted...and went back a page - ruining my perfectly long, in depth comment. sorry about that....
and im too lazy and tired to remember exactly what i had said.
oh yeah, i had one other piece of advise...get someone else to shoot the picture for you...or to stand on the chair, either way. even if you have topay your friend Jim in cheez-its and beer, it'll be worth it for the effort you'll save :)
